Product Category Maintenance

Last Revised: 04/25/21

Dynamo uses a single character Product Category to provide the broad grouping of sales and control General Ledger postings. See Product Class Maintenance for further grouping of products within each Product Category.

The Best Practice is for your company/organization to have two to nine Product Categories numbered 1 through 9, although you may use any letter or number.

For example, if your company sells Equipment, Parts, and Services, you could assign Product Categories as shown below.

Product Category Description Costing
1 Equipment C
2 Parts C
3 Services U

Some Dynamo Sales Analysis is grouped and sorted by Product Category, so the Best Practice is to assign Product Categories by sales from highest to lowest.

Product Category Maintenance is used to maintain your Product Categories.

In order to compute an accurate gross margin percentage, Dynamo needs to know which Product Categories have a cost associated with them, such as products bought and sold. The Product Category Type is used for this purpose.

Type Description
C - Costed For purchased or manufactured products that have an actual cost. These products are included on Sales Reports when computing Costed Sales, Gross Margin, and Gross Margin Percentage.
U - Uncosted For services or labor such as a delivery charge or assembly labor. Note however, services and labor can be considered costed when these products are assigned a standard cost.
O - Other Some products are excluded from Sales such as the sale of a Gift Card that can be used for future purchases. These products should fall within a Product Category with a type of "O" for Other.
